Cong stages walkout
Shimla, March 9 /--/ Opposition Congress today staged a walkout in the Himachal Pradesh assembly protesting hike in bus fares by the BJP government.       Immediately after the reply of chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on a motion of thanks to the Governor's address, leader of the Opposition Vidya Stokes rose from her seat and demanded that the state government withdraw the hike in bus fares. The Congress members walked out of the House shouting anti-government slogans when they did not get any response from the government on the issue.       Transport minister Mohinder Singh had on Monday through a suo motu statement in the House had announced 30 per cent hike in fares in Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses due to increase in prices of petrol and diesel recently. The increased fares have been implemented with immediate effect. Mr Dhumal criticised the opposition for staging walkout on an "unreasonable" ground.       The bus fares were raised because of the hike in fuel price by the Congress-led UPA government and it was ironical that Congress in the hill state was agitating over the issue, the chief minister said. Justifying the hike, he said HRTC had incurred a loss of Rs 512 crore in last financial year and it was impossible to run a fleet of 1900 HRTC buses without increasing fares after recent raise in fuel price.
