Bhubaneswar, March 9 /--/ Voicing concern over growing Naxal activities, the Orissa government on Monday said 60 people including 32 security personnel were killed in the state last year, but a bid for a 'Lalgarh type of campaign' by Maoists in Koraput district during last three months of 2009 was foiled.
"Attempts by Maoists to replicate a Lalgarh type campaign in Narayanpatna area in Koraput district has been dealt with firmly," Governor M C Bhandare said in his address to the state Assembly which opened for a short session. Mr Bhandare said the growing menace of Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha, a front organisation of Maoists, in Narayanpatna and adjoining areas had been effectively restrained. Thirty-two securitymen and 28 civilians were killed in 266 incidents of violence in the state last year, while anti-Maoist operations led to arrest of 182, neutralisation of 11 and surrender of eight in 2009, he said.
The state government focused on capacity build-up by raising the special operation group (SOG), special intelligence wing, four special security battalions, five India Reserve battalions (IRB) and the Orissa special security force, he said. In addition, the state government has embarked upon massive infrastructure upgradation by way of construction/ fortification of police stations and marine police stations and armouries, the Governor said.
