| Maoists freed teacher |
Jhargram (WB), March 9 /--/ A schoolteacher and CPI-M leader, abducted by Maoists on March 4 from Bankura district, was released unharmed in the wee hours today as his family "met the condition" of the Naxals.
Ranjit Duley was released at a remote place between Goaltore and Pingboni around 1.15 am to a select team of electronic media, which took him to Lalgarh police station, police said.
He was taken away at gunpoint from Barulia Madhyamik Siksha Kendra school in Sarenga of Bankura district while he was invigilating an examination.
Sidhu Soren, a leader of Sidhu Kano Gana Committee, the militant wing of the Maoist-backed People's Committee against Police Atrocities, said Duley was released as his family members had met the condition given to them.
"Their family members went to the police station and gave a deputation against the police. This prompted us to release him," Soren told PTI.
West Midnapore's Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma said Duley could not pinpoint the place he had been held or identify his kidnappers.
"We also wanted to ascertain whether he was tortured by the Maoists as he is an aged man. We did a clinical examination, but found that the kidnappers didn't torture him physically or harass him mentally. He is quite fit," Mr Verma said. .
Maoists had initially demanded the release of six of its cadre arrested for the killing of Sarenga police station in-charge Rabi Lochan Mitra on February 25.
The joint forces, after receiving a tip-off that the teacher had been taken to Bhalukbasa jungle in West Midnapore district, had cordoned off the area and traded fire with the Maoists, killing a cadre on Sunday.
DGP Bhupinder Singh had said there was no question of releasing the Maoists. "The Maoists are under pressure and have been scaling down their demands," he said last evening.
The teacher's family had also condemned operations by security forces and demanded the immediate release of 37 villagers detained during the manhunt.
Earlier in October 2009, Maoists had kidnapped and released an officer-in-charge of Sankrail police station Atindranath Dutta after a dozen arrested women sympathisers whose release was demanded, were freed.(PTI) |
