'Land areas being acquired for SEZ are cultivable'
Chennai, Feb 8 /--/ Tracts of cultivated land in Tamil Nadu were being acquired for special economic zone (SEZ) purpose by "doctoring" land-use records to show them as dry and fallow, a forum has alleged.   An audit report of the forum Against SEZs in Tamil Nadu, a not-for profit organisation in the state, alleged that revenue authorities had been complicit in doctoring the land-use records. The report was based on field visit and hearings held by a panel comprising members, including noted Supreme Court advocates Prashant Bhushan and Sanjay Parikh, college lecturers and social activists in six districts including Madurai and Tirunelveli, it said.   The report 'People's audit of Special Economic Zones in Tamil Nadu' released here recently by noted social activist Medha Patkar, alleged that cultivable lands were being categorised as dry and fallow. People were affected by land acquisition both in existing and upcoming SEZs like those in Madurai (1,400 acres) and Sriperumbudur (2,500 acre) in terms of loss of livelihood and lack of compensation.   The report, which will be presented before a national panel in March, also alleged that people voicing opposition were attacked or cases slapped against them.
