Shameless surrender
While the central government asked the Maharashtra chief minister to curb the vandalism and repeated threat with iron hand, the Maharashtra Congress and the NCP took the path of shameless surrender to the hawkers of provincialism. Earlier we have watched that when the newly formed MNS or Shiv Sena carried any type of vandalism in the heart of Mumbai, the Maharashtra government maintained a cryptic silent role in dealing with the ruffians. Even debate was blown over the issue across the nation, but in spite of that, the attitude of Maharashtra’s Congress-Shiv Sena combine did not change. This time in the chief ministers’ conference, held in New Delhi the PM Manmohan Singh himself asked the chief minister of Maharashtra to tackle the threat of Shiv Sena with iron hand.   Soon after the direction from the PM, it was seen that the NCP leader and central agriculture minister, who was also the BCCI president, dramatically visited the residence of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray and handed olive branches to him in the presence of Uddhav Thackeray. Afterwards ice began to melt. Soon after the discussion it came to public that Thackeray force had agreed to retreat from its earlier stand on IPL. Earlier Shiv Sena announced that it would not allow holding the IPL game if the cricketers from Australia participated in it. Since in Australia a number of untoward incidents happened, where the Indians were attacked and humiliated and even murdered, Shiv Sena utilized the emotion of the Indians affected in such incidents.   In addition, Shiv Sena banned the exhibition of the Shah Rukh Khan’s newly released film. Shahrukh’s ‘crime’ was that he had protested against Shiv Sena’s biased comment. Shahrukh Khan commented earlier that he would try to induct Pak players and he opined rightly that exclusion of the entire Pak players was not right decision for the IPL team management. Just for commenting this, Shiv Sena directed the owners of multiplexes in Mumbai not to exhibit Shahrukh’s film. Now Shiv Sena backed away from this threat also. It is also surprising that Shiv Sena took the decision to boycott the IPL league and Shahrukh’s film considering from some viewpoints. With the closed door meeting with Sharad Pawar that argument was vanished. It means there is in fact no argument or logic behind it. Everything is Bal Thackeray’s caprice. If he feels that anything is logical then his blind supporters will just follow him and vice versa. On the other hand, the stand, taken by the NCP leader and central agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, was dubious and shameless. In Maharashtra presently Congress-NCP ministry is in power. Why Pawar did take such soft line even before returning of the chief minister of Maharastra? Perhaps he felt that if Chavan took bold step against Shiv Sena then his politics of manoeuvering would be exposed. That is why Pawar did not delay for a while to visit Matoshree bhawan. Pawar’s such shameless politics will not last for long. Such elements are destroying our social fabric by comprising in every step only to serving their political purpose.
